Always the highest praises, especially the quiet operation. |
Comments from Burners:
very noisy!!! Building a plywood anti noise box didn't help much... |

| Tips from
Dana: What to consider when buying a power generator for BMAN |
| Noise |
| Noise- the
generator we had in camp is a Honda, which is one of the |
| best, most
quiet, small/easily portable and also most expensive to |
| buy. It's
for camping and small project use I think up to about |
| 2,000 watts
??? Most other generators are more for construction and |
| range from
2,000 to 7,000+ watts- BUT they are very very noisy, like |
| a loud lawn mower. |

| Size needed,
generator ratings are in Watts (120 volts x amps |
| needed) Most
electric motors (air blower) have two ratings i.e 4/8 |
| amp motor.
Meaning they draw more energy to start up, than they do |
| once running.
This is a big issue since most of the generators use a |
| "marketing
type" rating number- "peak load" "burst mode",
that |
| doesn't really
reflect it's true capabilities . Example a couple |
| years ago
I bought a 1800 watt coleman unit that should have easily |
| driven my
4/8 amp motor and didn't.... |

| Rentals / Price |
| Rentals -
$300-500 /week for the 5,000 watt larger units. I've |
| always needed
the larger size so not sure if they have the smaller |
| quieter ones |
| Extension cords |
| Extension
cords- Just FYI the longer away the generator is, from the |
| motor, the
more juice you will need, it loses some over distance. |
| Only a consideration
if your planning it close- ie the generator |
| rating vs motor need |
| Gas consumption |
| Gas- some
generators have bigger tanks and have the benefit of |
| running longer
before filling up. Smaller generators consume less |
| over time.
Some generators have a variable use mechanism, where they |
| slow down
for less juice and speed up for more, saving gas. There is |
| a whole "support"
issue with gas- getting it, storing in the playa |
| heat, pouring,
moving and especially in keeping fun loving and |
| occasionally smokers and those that spin fire,
away from the gas and |
| safe. They
passed some law about canisters bigger than 5 gallons in |
| Calif, so
they are hard to find, which just means a lot of small 5 |
| gallon containers...
(few people want to drive around with a whole |
| trunk full of gasoline containers). Not an
obstacle, but just |
| something
that needs some foresite & planning.. Good idea is to have |
| everyone
fill up their gas tanks at Gerlach (which is a good idea |
| anyway) then
you can siphon out into 2-3 x 5 gallon containers as |
| needed.. |
